Vintage Tea Room Creates Cozy Interlude

REGINA – It may be cold outside but Doug and Karen Howden have created a warm and cozy interlude from winter with The Vintage Tea Room and Purveyor of British Goods at 405 Broad St. We stopped in this past Saturday to enjoy a spot of afternoon tea and lovely cranberry scones smeared with Devonshire cream and homemade cranberry jelly. Tea, chosen from a list of various loose leaf teas, arrived in a one-of-a-kind dainty china tea cup and was served from a china tea pot complete with tea cozy. Scones and other dainties arrived on china plates. The owners tell us that many customers come to enjoy a full Victorian Tea with finger sandwiches, scones, Devonshire cream, jam and assorted dainties. Cost is $14.95/person and must be ordered ahead. Royal Tea takes Victorian Tea to a higher level with silver tea service and the finest china and all the extras ($19.95/person pre-ordered). British-style lunch is also available and includes such traditional fare as Cornish pastries, Melton Mowbray Pork Pie and Prince Phillip Slaw, and more. While you’re there, check out their selection of British dry goods and frozen products. They are open 8 am -5 pm Mon-Fri and 9 am – 5 pm Sat. Phone: (306) 205-5832.

Regina Spring Farmer’s Market Open REGINA - The Regina Farmers' Market opens for Spring Markets this Saturday, March 6th, 9:30am to 1:30pm. Drop in at 2900 13th Avenue (Cathedral Neighbourhood Center). Available will be lots of different produce and baked goods like greenhouse vegetables, hormone-free beef, honey, wild boar and pork, and spring lamb, crafts and lots more. The spring market will run until April 24, 2010.

New Sushi Restaurants

  • REGINA – Sake Japanese & Korean Cuisine finally opened its doors last week at 2135 Albert St, Regina. This restaurant has been a long time coming, with expected openings on several occasions last fall. Sake features an all-you-can-eat lunch for $16/person. The menu is very similar to their first location, Miso Ya on 229 Victoria Ave. Evening features an a la carte menu of sushi. Décor is very pleasant and service prompt. Phone 306-565-8892.
  • SASKATOON - Nagoya may be an industrial city in southern Honshu, Japan but it is also the name of the newly opened restaurant at 1036 Louise Avenue (8th Street and Louise – across from the MacDonald’s) run by Janet Chung and Chef Richie Wang. Along with the sushi, noodles and rolls, look for Teppanyaki, a style of Japanese cooking which uses an iron griddle to cook everything including battered foods, filled pancake-like rolls and a variety of meats and seafood. An all-you-can-eat buffet is offered at lunch and dinner (lunch buffet $14.99; dinner buffet $24.99). Hours: open 11:00 A.M. everyday and closing at 10:00 P.M. Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 P.M. on Friday and Saturday. Phone 306-956-7333.

Wine Appreciation for Women Only

Stacey Rutzki noses her wine.

REGINA – The RoofTop Bar and Grill together with Regina’s specialty wine shop Willow Park Wines and Spirits has started a women-only wine appreciation club called What Wine Women Want. It started this week and will be held every Wednesday evening beginning at 7 pm from now until June 30th. Each evening features four different wines. This week’s selection included two whites (2009 J. Bouchon Sauvignon Blanc, 2008 Ironstone Obsession) and two reds (2006 Tin Roof Merlot, 2008 Obikwa Shiraz). Michelle and Amber both from the Willow Park store took the group through how to taste and appreciate great wine. The evening was good fun, very relaxed and unpretentious. Cost is $19.95 per evening with tickets being purchased in advance. Each evening is limited to roughly 30 women. To purchase a ticket, call 359-7663.

Raising Awareness about Human Trafficking SASKATOON - Nashi's Perogy Paradise V will be held Saturday, March 13th. Nashi (Ukrainian for “Our Children”) is in the final stages of building a safe house in Ukraine for 16-year olds who come out of orphanages or who have been victims of human trafficking. This year’s Perogy Paradise event will feature Victor Malarek, CTV’s W5 journalist, who will be receiving a lifetime honorary membership and is coming with a film crew to video tape the organization’s efforts to raise awareness of human trafficking. The cash bar opens at 5:00 P.M. and supper is at 6:00 P.M. at the Manhattan Ballroom. Tickets are $40.00/person. For those who would like to make a donation for the silent auction or would like tickets, call Yvonne at 306-270-8596 or 306-653-2916.

Italian at the Willows SASKATOON - “Tuesdays in Tuscany” are actually Tuesday evenings at the Willows Golf and Country Club, 382 Cartwright Street, with Executive Chef Curtis Yanciw preparing Italian-inspired dinners. Every Tuesday evening in March he will create a three-course dinner ($30/person). Next week on March 9th the menu will be a risotto con funghi drizzled with white truffle oil; involtini di tacchino (pancetta-wrapped turkey rolled with herbed fig and bread stuffing) and Tiramisu. Call the Willows at 306-956-1100 for reservations.

U of S Faculty Club Events SASKATOON - Events at the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Club for the month of March include an Irish Theme Lunch Buffet on Wednesday, March 17th along with Celtic fiddlers as an added bonus. Girl’s Night out in the Lounge 4:30 – 7:30 with proceeds going to the Marathon of Hope on Thursday, March 25th, and Chef’s Kevin’s Tour of Mexico Buffet on Friday, March 26th.

REGINA – How about cold water chemical free shrimp fished from the Gaspé region?. Or maybe a calamari confit, or halibut and scallops wrapped in wild Canadian salmon? If all goes well, a group of business people from Quebec’s Gaspé region will be selling their locally produced product in Saskatchewan stores and restaurants. Last year a Regina group traveled to the Gaspé to introduce Quebecers in the area to Saskatchewan products. This week, a delegation from the Gaspé travelled to Regina to meet with chefs, fish distributors and Regina business people to promote their top quality fish and seafood, and organic maple syrup.

Today, thanks to the Internet, there are millions of wine review and wine reviewers out there. A Google search of “free wine reviews” produces 56,300,000 hits. In fact, there are now so many people posting wine reviews, that some wine writers argue that all this information is at best, useless. Several of the wine press establishment have gone so far as to condemn the proliferation of “wine bloggers” as being dangerous for writing about wine with minimal experience, little credibility and no “journalistic integrity”. (Googling “wine blog” produces 93,500,000 hits.)
